Numbers is a unique take on a spreadsheet app, acting more like a document than the typical grid-filled sheet you’ll find in Excel or Google Sheets. Crunch the numbers you need, then add text and charts around it in the blank document to build a full report around your core table.

Keynote, similarly, is great for more than just your standard slideshow. Its animations are so fluid, it’s a popular tool for prototyping new apps and making short animated videos. Or, just use it to make your next meeting a bit more interesting—with the new Keynote Live, you can stream your presentation online right from Keynote.

iWork is best in its native apps on Mac and iOS, though you can also use it online from iCloud.com. That’s a great way to share your files with colleagues who don’t use iWork or to quickly tweak a presentation from a work computer when you forget your laptop.

Apple Numbers vs Microsoft Excel vs Google Sheets: Creating formulae and using functions

Where Numbers becomes perhaps a little more obtuse is in the creation of Formulas. These are the calculations that sit at the heart of a spreadsheet. Where you say Cell A3 = A1 + A3. Or “=Sum A1(A2+A3)” in Excel speak. Functions are the built-in commands you use to create formulae, such as SUM.

Apple has really tried to make this whole system more graphical, and intuitive, to the average person. But we do find the graphical system more confusing, and Excel’s system more plain-speaking.

Functions and Formulas are simply one aspect of spreadsheeting that people have look up and learn. It’s not easy enough to just do in either Numbers or Excel without spending time learning about what’s going on.

In trying to make it easier, Numbers has a layer of abstraction to creating formulae and functions that makes the app more difficult to use. Numbers remains a little impenetrable compared to other Apple apps.

Google Sheets follows Excel’s lead in creating functions. Rather than a highly graphical interface, you enter calculations into the formula bar. Tapping the “fx” icon brings up a list of formulae to choose from, but there’s very little hand-holding.

Presentations: Keynote vs PowerPoint vs Slides

Keynote has always been Apple’s best office app, and the same holds true on iOS. Aside from offering gorgeous templates to choose from, Keynote’s interface feels as it if were made for the touch screen. Adding slides couldn’t be easier, and neither could tweaking them to your liking. Just like the other iWork apps, formatting and editing is interactive, so the menus will change depending on what type of content you’re working with. The Keynote Remote feature also lets you use one iOS device as a remote to control a presentation on another, or even on a Mac.

PowerPoint is no a slouch when it comes to creating presentations either. You can create animations, transitions, and much more in just a few taps. If you’ve ever used PowerPoint on the desktop computer, the experience is very much the same on iPad and iPhone. Inserting objects is also easy and includes support not only for tables and pictures, but videos as well.

Unfortunately Google Slides doesn’t provide as great of an experience as either Keynote or PowerPoint do. Slides are technically «editable» but not functionally. You can add text into existing text boxes but there isn’t a way to add, move, or edit them. Basically, you have to pick from Google’s pre-made slides and be happy with text-only slides with no image support, unless, of course, you are okay with finishing things up from a web browser. You can choose themes on the web and then they’ll sync down to the mobile version, but again, not very convenient.

Keynote and PowerPoint run neck and neck when it comes to creating presentations. Both support inserting images, videos, and other kinds of objects as well as the option to choose from many great looking templates. Google Slides can’t really offer any of that.

Apple Numbers vs Microsoft Excel vs Google Sheets: Advantages of Google Sheets

This round-up presents Google Sheets as a sub-standard offering compared to Microsoft Excel and Apple’s Numbers. This is at odds with our humble reviewer, who would like to point out that they use Google Sheets on a daily basis.

When listing features, and finesse, it’s easy to spot the ways in which Excel and Numbers tower over Sheets. For all that, Sheets remains one of the first apps we go to when crunching numbers. Why? There are several reasons to pick Google Sheets over any other app.

Google Sheets is incredibly fast. Built from the ground up to work inside a web browser, it’s intentionally lightweight. And like all lightweight apps, it rarely grinds to a halt while crunching data. Furthermore, its lack of clutter makes the interface easy to navigate and features easy to find. Seasoned Excel users will often grind their teeth at missing features, but newcomers will appreciate its simplicity.

We also love the autosave and revisions feature that exist across Google Docs. You don’t worry about saving documents in Google Sheets; your work is always saved as you go. It’s also the best suite around for collaborative working. Multiple people can jump into a document at once and see each other’s pointers as they edit.

Google Sheets is a great app on the desktop, but Google has let the iOS version languish. You can’t add tables, charts or forms in Sheets for iOS; none of the desktop add-ons work and there’s no spell checker.

Microsoft Office 365

Microsoft Office 365 is de uitgebreidste van de drie geteste cloudofficepakketen. Verder omvat Office 365 20 GB opslagruimte op SkyDrive en krijg je maandelijks 60 belminuten om met Skype naar vaste en mobiele telefoonnummers te bellen. Synchronisatie en het opslaan van bestanden gebeurt via SkyDrive. SkyDrive zit standaard in Windows 8 en Windows Phone 8, en kan via een aparte installatie aan eerdere versies van het besturingssysteem én aan Mac OS X worden toegevoegd. Verder zijn er versies van SkyDrive voor iOS (iPhone, iPad en iPod) en Android-smartphones.

4. Collaboration and Co-Authoring

Both suites offer real-time collaboration, so you can work on a document with other people remotely. When it comes to Apple iWork versus Microsoft Office, it’s hard to say which app comes out on top since the features are so similar.

In either office suite, click the Share or Collaborate button from the user interface to send a document invite to one of your contacts. That person can then make real-time changes to your document, which shows up on your screen.

This is a valuable feature and it’s useful to know that you won’t sacrifice it by switching to iWork. That said, whoever you want to work with needs to use the same app as you. You can’t collaborate from iWork to Office, for instance.

Since iWork is available free on any Apple product, that might actually make it easier to find people to collaborate with.

iWork has lots of other sharing features built in, too. The Share menu lets you create iCloud links, send the document via Messages, or transfer it to another device using AirDrop. These might not seem like a big deal at first, but if you work with a lot of people who use Macs, you’ll definitely use it.

Microsoft Office has always been the most advanced productivity suite on the market. Anyone that’s already familiar with Office 365 on the PC will feel right at home with Office for iPad or iPhone. Office is also the only offering that includes Dropbox integration, which is something you’ll want to consider if you keep most of your documents there. The more advanced features of Office will require a 365 subscription, however. If you already have an Office subscription, Microsoft Office is hands down the best option for you considering all the premium features you already have access to.

Best for a new, paper-free approach to office

Quip decided to rethink office software. The whole idea of documents is still rooted in paper—in most word processors, you work in a virtual sheet of A4 paper, even though you might not print the finished document. Quip does away with that skeuomorphism.

Just like a web page, your Quip documents go on forever with nary a page break or footer in sight. Write and organize your text with web-style headers. Use standard keyboard shortcuts to format your text—or hover over the left side of a paragraph to turn it into a quote, code block, header, or list. On the right, add new sections to your document—links to other documents, smart dates that remind you when they’re due, and mentions to pull others into your document. They’re living documents, smart pages with everything you’re working on—stuff that could never fit on a printed sheet.

Mix simple spreadsheets into documents, see what changed over time, and chat with your team in one app

Need to crunch numbers? Just insert a spreadsheet block into your document for a smart table that supports standard spreadsheet functions. It’s perhaps the easiest way to make a full report—you can write the document and find the data for the report all in one place.

Quip is best when shared with your team. It includes Slack-like team chat rooms where you can discuss ideas and share gifs with your colleagues. Each document has its own tiny chat in the sidebar, where you can track changes and chat with your team about the content.

It’s far more basic than the other office suites. You can’t select your own typeface or other formatting options—Quip instead includes a half-dozen document templates to style your document. And there’s no presentation app, unlike other office suites. But it is a simpler way to put your data to work, without the legacy paper-style features most office suites are still built around.

Apple Numbers vs Microsoft Excel vs Google Sheets: Editing data

Excel for iPad is very much what it says on the tin: Microsoft Excel running on your iPad. Instead of having a table on a blank sheet (as in Numbers), you get one giant sheet. Tap on a cell to edit the data contained therein (there are two types of keyboard: text and numbers). Above the main sheet is the Functions bar, and tapping an = symbol in a cell brings up the Functions pop-up with Recently Used Functions and All Functions. At the top is a dual-deck navigation bar with Home, Insert, Formulas, Review and View. If you insert charts, pictures and shapes then an additional menu option appears on the right.

You tap on cells in Excel to edit data, and can choose between four onscreen keyboards: Numbers, Date and Time, Text, and Functions. The keyboard changes based upon what cell you have selected, but a shortcut on the top of the keyboard changes the cell type.

Entering numbers, dates and texts, is straightforward enough in all three apps. All apps present you with cells (rows of boxes arranged into rows and columns). You select a cell, and then enter text, numbers or formulas (calculations) into a text/formula bar.

All the other options are pushed into a Menu. In Excel you use the menu bar, and in Numbers and Sheets you add charts, shapes and photos using the icons in the top-right. As we noted in the recent
Microsoft Word review, we favour Microsoft’s plain text approach to menus over Apple’s iconographic approach. Google Sheets shares Apple’s approach, but its menu options are so limited its more of a moot point.

We find Microsoft Excel to be swift and fast to edit data, even large amounts of data. Anybody who works with Microsoft Excel documents on a regular basis will be pleased with the implementation of Excel on an iPad.

Versieverschillen zouden daardoor niet moeten kunnen voorkomen, maar in praktijk komen ze helaas wel voor. Wordt hetzelfde document gelijktijdig op bijvoorbeeld een iPad en iMac bewerkt, dan verschijnt in beide programma’s een waarschuwingen en moet de gebruiker kiezen welk van de versies hij wil weggooien en met welke hij verder wil gaan.

De functionaliteit van de web-apps op iCloud blijft nog flink achter bij de concurrentie.

Doordat de verschillen niet zichtbaar worden gemaakt is het vooral een gok met grote kans op verlies van gegevens. Offline werken is mogelijk op iOS en Mac OS X.

Вариант 3. Онлайн: Можно вообще не платить и пользоваться онлайн-версией в OneDrive. Она сильно ограничена в функциональности, да и всю прелесть новой редакции не передаёт. Но работает.

Доступность Office сегодня – максимальная. 229 рублей в месяц в рамках пакета Office 365. Дешевле не бывает и не будет. Так чего ждать? Сравните версии сами и решите, какая подойдёт вам больше всего:

Apple Numbers vs Microsoft Excel vs Google Sheets: Excel’s new Draw feature on the iPad

One newer feature that Microsoft has included with Excel is the ability to draw over the top of spreadsheets. Data purists may baulk at the idea, but the ability to sketch notes over charts and data is an important step towards a paper-free office.

The implementation is neat on an iPad Pro with
Apple Pencil too. Simply tap the Draw menu, and you can draw highlights, lines and objects on top of your spreadsheet. These can be deleted individually, or included with PDFs that you share.

Draw is an excellent inclusion to Excel, and one we think Apple should include in its apps (we imagine a similar function won’t be far away).

Apple Numbers vs Microsoft Excel vs Google Sheets: Is Numbers compatible with Excel?

The font Franklin gothic Medium isn’t available in iOS. It was replaced with Helvetica
Some formulas couldn’t be exported. Last values were retained
Hidden sheets were made visible
Unsupported formulas were replaced by the last calculated value

On the surface, it looked mostly all right. The Product and Quarter column titles were missing, and some of the data fields were aligned differently; but the chart and numbers rendered correctly. Closer inspection of the formulae, however, showed that behind the scenes they had been simplified.

We find Numbers hard to accept in a corporate environment that is entrenched with Microsoft Office. Employees will be required to open, edit and share Office documents without reformatting or changing them. These employees will be most pleased to find Microsoft Excel on their iPad.
